William Levitt was a famous American real estate developer. He is often called the father of modern American suburbia. This means he changed how many people live in large communities. After World War II, many veterans needed affordable places to live. The country was growing quickly during this time. Levitt saw a way to meet this huge need.

He became a leader in building many new homes.

Levitt used a special way to build houses very fast. He used an assembly line method to make them. This is like how cars are made in factories. Teams of workers moved from one house to the next. Each team did one small, specific job. This allowed them to finish a house in less than six weeks. They built homes on concrete slabs without deep foundations.

This method made building much more efficient.

Levitt was born in 1907 in Brooklyn, New York. His family had moved to the United States from Russia and Austria. His father, Abraham Levitt, started a building company in 1929. William later became the president of Levitt & Sons. He served in the Navy as a lieutenant during World War II. After the war, he began his most famous work. He built his first successful town near Hempstead, Long Island. This town was named Levittown.

Levitt built thousands of homes in many different places. He built homes in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. He even built a Levittown in Puerto Rico. His houses often cost about $8,000 each. Some buyers only needed to pay $400 upfront. At his busiest time, he finished a house every 11 minutes.

In 1967, he sold his company for $92 million. He had built over 140,000 houses around the world.

While his building methods were new, Levitt also had unfair rules. He refused to sell his homes to African Americans. This caused many protests by civil rights groups. Some groups even went to court to fight his policies. Later in life, Levitt faced many hard financial problems. He died from kidney disease in 1994 at age 86.
