Dan Bricklin is a famous American engineer and businessman. He is best known for creating VisiCalc. This was the very first electronic spreadsheet program. A spreadsheet is a digital tool used for math and numbers. Before this invention, people had to do math by hand. They used paper sheets to track their money and data.

This work was often very slow and difficult. Bricklin's invention changed how people used computers forever.

His new program worked in a very clever way. In the old days, changing one number meant redoing all the math. This could take a person 20 hours of hard work. VisiCalc changed that entire process. It ran on the Apple II computer. If a user changed one cell, the whole sheet updated itself.

This task suddenly took only 15 minutes. This helped people be more creative with their work.

Bricklin grew up in Philadelphia and studied very hard. He went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also called MIT. He earned a degree in electrical engineering and computer science in 1973. Later, he went to Harvard Business School. While he was a student there in 1979, he co-developed VisiCalc.

He worked with a partner named Bob Frankston. Together, they founded a company called Software Arts, Inc.

Bricklin has had a very busy and successful career. He started a company called Software Garden in 1985. He also founded Trellix Corporation in 1995. He has won many special awards for his smart ideas. In 1981, he received the Grace Murray Hopper Award.

He was also named a Fellow of the Computer History Museum in 2004. In 2003, he joined the National Academy of Engineering. These honors show how much his work helped the world.

Today, Bricklin is still making new and useful tools. He created Note Taker HD for the Apple iPad. This app helps people use their handwritten notes on a tablet. He is also working on wikiCalc. This is a spreadsheet that works on the web.

His work connects the way we used to write with new technology. He continues to help businesses through his work at Alpha Software. He remains a leader in the world of computers.
