Dan Bricklin is an engineer and businessman. He is famous for making VisiCalc. This was the first electronic spreadsheet program. A spreadsheet is a tool for math. Before VisiCalc, people did math by hand. This took a long time. If a number changed, they had to redo everything. VisiCalc changed that. It worked on the Apple II computer. If a user changed one number, the whole sheet updated itself. This turned 20 hours of work into 15 minutes. This tool helped the personal computer industry grow very fast.

Bricklin studied at MIT and Harvard. He worked for many companies. He started Software Garden in 1985. He also started Trellix Corporation. He still makes software tools today. He made a tool for the iPad. It helps people use handwritten notes. He is also working on wikiCalc. This is a spreadsheet that works on the web. Many groups have honored him. He won the Grace Murray Hopper Award in 1981. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
