William Labov was a famous man who studied language. He is known as the founder of sociolinguistics. This is the study of how people use language in groups. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania for many years. Labov looked at how different people speak. He studied the ways people talk in New York City. He also studied African American Vernacular English, or AAVE. He said AAVE is not bad or wrong. He argued that it has its own rules. This helped people respect all ways of speaking. Labov also studied how we tell stories. He looked at how stories have a special order. He said stories usually follow the order of events. This helps us understand the meaning of a story. He found that stories have parts like an orientation. This part tells us the person, place, and time. He also looked at the main action of a story. He studied how sounds in words change over time. He found big shifts in how people say vowels. These shifts happen in different parts of North America. His work changed how we think about speech and stories.
