The wild Bactrian camel is a very special animal living in the deserts of Northwest China and Southwest Mongolia.

These camels are a unique species that is now critically endangered. While they look like the camels people keep on farms, they are actually different. Scientists have found that they split into two separate species a long time ago. This change happened between 700,000 and 1.1 million years ago. They are not the ancestors of domestic camels, but are more like distant cousins.

These animals have many clever ways to survive in the harsh desert. They have long, narrow nostrils and double rows of thick eyelashes. These help protect them from sand during big storms. Their feet have two large toes that spread wide apart. This helps them walk on hot sand or rough stones.

Their humps are smaller and more cone-shaped than domestic camels. One amazing thing is how they drink. They can survive on water that is saltier than seawater. This is something almost no other mammal in the world can do.

For a long time, people thought these camels were just a type of domestic camel. They were even given the name *C. bactrianus ferus*. The word *ferus* means wild. Later, research showed they were a full, separate species called *Camelus ferus*.

Scientists also found they are related to an extinct animal called the giant camel. That giant camel lived and died out about 20,000 years ago. Studying the DNA of these camels helps us understand this ancient history.

Today, there are only about 950 wild Bactrian camels left in the world.

Many live in the Lop Nur Wild Camel National Nature Reserve in China. Others live in the Great Gobi A Strictly Protected Area in Mongolia. In 2018, researchers spotted many camels in the Altun Shan and Dunhuang reserves. Some populations are very small and spread far apart. They often live in groups of 2 to 15 members. A single adult male usually leads these groups as they move.

These camels face many hard jobs to stay alive. People sometimes hunt them for their meat and hides. New roads and oil fields also change the places where they live. A fence between China and Mongolia even stops them from traveling.

They also have to watch out for wolves that hunt them. To help, many countries have made special nature reserves. Some groups even help breed camels in safe places. This work aims to keep these amazing desert travelers from disappearing forever.
