Werner von Siemens was a very important German inventor and engineer.

He helped start the modern age of electricity. His ideas changed how people move and how they talk to each other. Because he did so much for science, his name is used today as a unit to measure electrical conductance. This unit is called the siemens. He was also a leader in business. He started a large company that still exists today.

Siemens worked on many different ways to use electricity. He invented a special telegraph that used a needle to point at letters. This was different from Morse code. He also worked on a dynamo, which is a machine that helps create electricity.

This machine was a very big step for science. Later, his work on a moving-coil transducer helped lead to the making of loudspeakers. He even helped develop the very first electric cars.

Werner was born in 1816 in a place called Lenthe. He was the third child in a very large family of fourteen children.

He wanted to go to a special school in Berlin. However, his family had a lot of debt and could not pay the fees. Because of this, he joined a military school for artillery and engineering from 1835 to 1838. He was a good soldier and earned many medals. During a war, he even helped invent sea mines that used electricity.

Many amazing things happened because of his hard work. In 1847, he started his own company called Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske.

In 1877, he received a German patent for his moving-coil machine. He built the world's first electric passenger train in 1879. The next year, in 1880, he made the first electric elevator. In May 1881, his company started the first electric tram service in a place called Groß-Lichterfelde. He even tested a trolleybus called the "Elektromote" in 1882.

His inventions are still part of our lives today. When you ride in an elevator, you are using a type of machine he helped create. When you hear music from a loudspeaker, you are using technology that started with his ideas.

His company, Siemens, is now one of the largest companies in the world. Even a flowering plant in Cuba was named Siemensia to honor him. His life shows how one person's curiosity can change the whole world.
