A weighing scale is a very useful tool. It helps us measure mass, which is the amount of matter in an object.

People use these devices for many different jobs. Many products are sold and packaged by their mass in stores. You might see scales used to weigh fruit in a supermarket.

Scales are also used to measure babies.

Because mass is so important for trade, scales are used all over the world.

One classic way a scale works is called a balance. A traditional balance has a beam with a center point called a fulcrum.

Two plates or bowls hang from the ends of this beam. You place an object of unknown mass in one plate. Then, you add objects of known mass, called weights, to the other plate. You keep adding weights until the plates level off. This state is called mechanical equilibrium.

When the plates are level, the masses on both sides are equal.

People have used scales for thousands of years. The oldest evidence of weighing scales comes from Egypt's Fourth Dynasty.

During the reign of Sneferu around 2600 BC, people used deben balance weights. Egyptian merchants used carved stones to measure gold shipments. In the Indus River valley, people also used polished stone cubes as weights. In China, an old wooden balance was found in a tomb from the 3rd or 4th century BC.

These early tools helped people trade fairly.

There are many different kinds of scales today. Some use a spring to find mass. A spring scale uses a spring with a known stiffness. When you hang an object, the spring stretches more if the object is heavier.

Other scales are much more complex. A Roberval balance uses a special shape called a parallelogram.

This design is great because the scale stays balanced no matter where you put the weight in the pan. There are even torsion balances that use a twisting wire to measure mass very accurately.

Modern science uses special scales to see things we cannot easily feel. A microbalance can measure tiny amounts of mass. It can measure even a million parts of a gram!

Scientists also use an analytical balance in labs. These scales are often kept inside a clear box. This box stops dust or air from moving the scale.

These advanced tools allow researchers to study the smallest parts of our world with great precision.
