Weight

Weight is a special kind of force. It is the pull of gravity on an object from other things nearby.

In science, people define weight in a few different ways. Some say it is a vector, which means it has a specific direction. Others call it a scalar, which just looks at the size of the force. You might also think of weight as what a scale measures. This is the force an object uses to push against its support.

If you are falling through the air, a scale would show zero. This is because you are not pushing on anything at all.

How weight works depends on where you are. Weight is the result of mass and gravity working together. The math shows that weight equals mass times the acceleration of gravity.

On Earth, an object with a mass of one kilogram weighs about 9.8 newtons. A newton is the standard unit used to measure force. If you went to the Moon, you would weigh much less. You would only feel about one-sixth of your Earth weight there. This happens because the Moon does not pull as strongly as Earth. Even though your mass stays the same, your weight changes.

People have wondered about weight for a very long time. Ancient Greek thinkers like Plato and Aristotle had many ideas. Plato thought objects wanted to find their own kind. Aristotle believed weight helped things return to their natural place. Archimedes studied how weight works with buoyancy to make things float. Later, Euclid used a balance to compare the heaviness of things.

These early thinkers saw weight as a part of what an object is. They did not yet know about the force of gravity.

Scientists made huge discoveries in the 1600s and 1700s. Galileo found that weight is related to how much matter is in an object. Then, Isaac Newton changed everything with his laws of motion. He showed that weight is a force caused by gravity. Newton also noticed that things like air could change a measurement. He called this "apparent weight" to show it was different from true weight. In 1901, a big meeting called the CGPM made an official rule. They declared that weight is a force and is different from mass.

Understanding weight helps us understand the whole universe. It connects to how we use scales every single day. It also links to big ideas like how space and time curve. In the 20th century, Albert Einstein showed that gravity is very complex. His ideas about relativity changed how we look at weight and motion. Even though it can be a hard topic to teach, it is very important. It helps us explain why we stay on the ground and how planets move.
