Newton (unit)

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A newton is a special unit used to measure force. Force is a push or a pull on an object. Scientists use this unit in the International System of Units. This system is also called the SI. It helps people all over the world use the same measurements. The symbol for a newton is just a capital N.

To understand a newton, we look at how things move. One newton is the force that moves a one kilogram mass. This mass must speed up at a specific rate. We call this rate one metre per second squared. This means the speed increases by one metre per second every second. It is a very precise way to measure a push.

This unit honors a famous scientist named Isaac Newton. He did great work on classical mechanics. He is well known for his second law of motion. This law explains how force and acceleration work together. In 1946, leaders met to standardize force in the MKS system. They decided one kilogram moving at that rate was the standard. In 1948, they officially gave the unit his name.

We can see newtons in many everyday things. On Earth, gravity creates force on everything. An apple with a mass of 200 grams exerts about two newtons. This is how we measure the weight of the apple. An average adult weighs about 608 newtons on Earth. This is based on a mass of 62 kilograms.

Sometimes forces are much larger than a single newton. We use kilonewtons, or kN, for these big forces. One kilonewton is equal to 1,000 newtons. A jet engine has a thrust of about 130 kN. Rock climbers use gear like carabiners to stay safe. A climbing rope must handle a fall of 12 kN. These tools must be very strong to protect people.
