This unit is named after Isaac Newton. He was a scientist who studied motion.

One newton is a specific amount of force. It is the force needed to move one kilogram of mass. This mass must speed up by one metre per second every second. We call this speeding up acceleration.

On Earth, gravity creates force. An apple has a mass of 200 grams. It exerts about two newtons of force. This is its weight. An average adult has a mass of 62 kilograms. This person exerts about 608 newtons of force on Earth.

Sometimes forces are very big. We use kilonewtons for these. One kilonewton is 1,000 newtons.

A jet engine has a thrust of about 130 kilonewtons. Rock climbers use gear like carabiners. These tools must be very strong. A climbing rope must not break during a fall. Testing shows a human can face 12 kilonewtons of force.
