Volume fraction

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

How much space does a part take up in a mix? We use a number called volume fraction to show this.

To find the volume fraction, you do a simple math step. You take the volume of one part. Then you divide it by the total volume of all parts. This gives you a number like 0.18. This number has no unit. All the parts in a mix must add up to 1.

You can also use volume percent. This is a way to show the mix with a percent sign. For example, 18% is the same as 0.18. People often use this for mixing two fluids. This includes liquids or gases.

Sometimes, mixing things changes their size. Think about mixing water and ethanol. These two liquids stick together. This is called intermolecular attraction. Because they stick, the mix takes up less space than the parts alone.

If you see a label for 40% alcohol, it means something special. It means there are 40 units of ethanol. Then, you add enough water to reach 100 units total. You do not just add 60 units of water. This is because the mix loses some volume.
