Have you ever mixed juice with water? You can change how strong a mix is. In science, we call this concentration. It is the amount of one thing in a total mix.

We use two main words to describe a mix. A mix with a low amount of stuff is dilute. A mix with a high amount of stuff is concentrated. You can make a mix more concentrated by adding more solute. A solute is the stuff you add to a mix. You can also do this by taking away the solvent. The solvent is the liquid that does the mixing.

To make a mix dilute, you add more solvent. This makes the mix weaker. Sometimes, a mix gets full. This is called a saturated solution. At this point, no more solute can dissolve. If you add more, it will not mix in. The extra stuff stays separate. This can happen because of heat. Heat can change the volume of a mix. This is called thermal expansion. Scientists use many ways to measure these levels.
