Density tells us how much mass is in a certain space. We call this space volume.

Different materials have different densities. For example, osmium is the densest element we know. This means it is very heavy for its size.

Density helps us see if things will sink or float. We can compare a material to water. If a substance has a lower density than water, it floats. If it is denser than water, it sinks.

Air density vs temperature
Air density vs temperature

Temperature and pressure can change density. When you increase pressure, density goes up. This happens because the volume gets smaller.

When you increase temperature, density usually goes down. This happens because the volume gets larger. This change is a big deal for gases. In liquids, heating the bottom can cause convection. This is when warm, less dense liquid rises up. The colder, denser liquid stays below it.

Scientists use many ways to measure density. They might use a tool called a hydrometer. This tool works for liquids. They can also use a scale to find mass. Then they measure the volume of the object.
