Concentration

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Concentration tells us how much of one thing is in a mix. In chemistry, it is the amount of a part divided by the total volume. Scientists often look at a solute and a solvent. A solute is the substance being added to a mix. A solvent is the liquid that does the mixing.

We use different words to describe these mixes. A mix with a low amount of stuff is called dilute. A mix with a high amount of stuff is called concentrated. You can make a mix more concentrated in two ways. You can add more solute or you can remove some solvent.

There are many ways to measure these levels. One way is mass concentration. This is the mass of one part divided by the total volume. Its unit is kg/m3 or g/L. Another way is molar concentration. This uses the amount of a part in moles. The common unit for this is mol/L.

Scientists also use number concentration. This counts the number of entities in a volume. The unit is 1/m3. Finally, there is volume concentration. This is the volume of one part divided by the total volume. It is often shown as a percentage.

Sometimes a mix reaches a limit. This happens when no more solute can dissolve. We call this a saturated solution. If you add more solute to a saturated mix, it will not dissolve. The extra stuff will just stay separate. This can lead to phase separation. This means the substances stay in different layers.

In some special cases, a mix can become supersaturated. The point where a mix becomes saturated depends on many things. The temperature around the mix matters a lot. The specific type of solute and solvent also matters.

Temperature can change how a mix works. This is because of something called thermal expansion. This means the volume changes when the temperature changes. This change affects the concentration levels.

We can also look at other related amounts. Molality is the amount of a part divided by the mass of the solvent. This uses the unit mol/kg. There is also the mole fraction. This is the amount of a part divided by the total amount of everything. Scientists sometimes use parts-per notation for very small amounts. This includes terms like ppm or ppb.

Concentration is like a level on a graph. You can have high or low levels. For example, blood can have high levels of bilirubin. This is a type of concentration in the blood serum.

You can think of it like making a drink. If you add too much powder, the drink is concentrated. If you add too much water, the drink is dilute. These rules help scientists understand how every mixture behaves. It helps them know exactly what is inside a liquid.
