Volume fraction

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

How much space does one part take up in a mix? Scientists use a number called volume fraction to answer this. It helps us understand the makeup of a mixture. This idea is used in chemistry and fluid mechanics. A volume fraction is a dimensionless quantity. This means it has no unit like inches or grams. It is just a simple number like 0.18.

To find this number, you follow a specific way it works. First, you find the volume of one part. This part is called a constituent. Next, you find the total volume of all parts before they are mixed. You divide the small volume by the total volume. This math step gives you the volume fraction. If you add up every fraction in the mix, the sum is always 1.

There is another way to show these numbers. You can use volume percent, or vol%. This is very similar to volume fraction. The main difference is the math used for the bottom number. Volume percent uses a denominator of 100. For example, 18% is the same as 0.18. People often use volume percent when mixing two fluids. These fluids can be liquids or gases.

Sometimes, mixing things is not as simple as adding them. In ideal solutions, the volumes are additive. This means the final volume equals the sum of all parts. However, some mixtures are non-ideal. For example, water and ethanol are miscible in all proportions. This means they can mix together in any amount. When you mix them, the total volume actually gets smaller. This happens because of intermolecular attraction.

This shrinkage changes how we read labels. A label might say "40% alcohol by volume." This does not mean 40 units of ethanol and 60 units of water. It means 40 units of ethanol and enough water to reach 100 units total. You must add slightly more than 60 units of water. This is because the mixture loses volume. You can also relate volume fraction to mass fraction using density.
