Pareto worked as an engineer for a short time. He worked for a railway company. He also worked in iron factories. After that, he became a teacher. He taught economics at a school in Switzerland. He stayed there for most of his life.

Pareto is famous for a special rule. He looked at wealth in Italy. He saw that 20% of the people owned 80% of the property. This is often called the Pareto principle. It is also known as the 80-20 rule. He thought this pattern happened in many places.

He also studied how groups lead. He called these groups the elite. He said that groups of leaders change over time. He believed that history is a story of these changing groups. His ideas still help people study math and society today.
