People use the word vijñāna to talk about the mind. It can mean many things. Some call it consciousness or a life force. Others call it wisdom or intelligence. These ideas come from old texts.

In Buddhism, this idea is very important. It is seen as a force that makes a body live. It is also one of five parts of our experience. These parts are called aggregates. One part is our physical form. Other parts are feelings and perceptions. Another part is how we act. Vijñāna is the part that knows things. For example, it knows if a taste is sweet or salty. It is different from perception. Perception sees colors like red or blue. But consciousness can know more than just shapes.

There are six ways we use consciousness. We use our eyes, ears, and nose. We also use our tongue and body. The sixth way is the mind itself. These six ways help us meet the world. When we hear a sound, our ear-consciousness arises. This can lead to a feeling. That feeling might lead to craving. Some thinkers say we should not hold on to these feelings. This helps people find peace.
