In Hinduism, many people believe in the Ātman.

This is the true essence or "Self" of every living thing. It is not the same as the ego or the body. The Ātman is seen as eternal and unchanging. This means it stays the same even as a person grows.

Some ancient texts use a special story to explain this. They say the Self is like a rider in a chariot.

The body is the chariot. The mind acts like the reins. The senses are like the horses. When the rider is mindful, they can find bliss and freedom.

There are many different views on the Ātman. In the Samkhya school, there are many different selves. In the Advaita Vedanta school, there is only one Self. This one Self is also called Brahman. Some say the Ātman and Brahman are the same. Others say they are different but connected. The Bhagavad Gita says the Ātman cannot be killed. It is like changing old clothes for new ones. People seek self-knowledge to reach a state called moksha, or liberation.
