It is known for its constant, spinning motion. This is called a rotary dance. Dancers spin in a natural way toward the leader's right. They can also spin in a reverse way toward the left. They use special change steps to switch their direction. This dance is much faster than the English waltz. The slow waltz moves at 90 beats per minute. The Viennese waltz moves at about 180 beats per minute. It is a very energetic way to move with a partner.

Learning the moves takes a lot of skill and focus.

In the International Style, dancers stay in a closed position. This means they hold each other closely while they turn. This style uses specific steps like the fleckerls or the left whisk. It also uses moves called contra checks and canter-time pivot turns. The American Style gives dancers much more freedom. They can use many different positions and moves. Some modern moves like the side sway are new additions. A true waltz focuses mainly on the turns and the changes.

This dance has a very long and interesting history. It emerged in Austria during the second half of the 18th century. It grew out of older dances like the Ländler.

At first, the dance looked quite different than it does now. Couples did not always hold each other in a closed embrace. They often stood side by side or used semi-closed holds. Their arms were often intertwined as they moved. They also kept their feet turned out. The rise and fall of their feet was very strong. These old styles were different from the modern way.

In the early days, the waltz was quite controversial.

Dancers wore long gowns that could be hard to manage. They would lift their dresses high like cloaks. This kept the fabric from being stepped on. It also brought their bodies very close together. Some people in the 1700s thought this was not polite. A man named Wolf even wrote a pamphlet against it in 1797. Despite this, the dance became a huge hit in Vienna. Large halls like the Apollo opened in 1808 for dancers. The dance spread to England before the year 1812.

Music helped the Viennese waltz become famous all over the world.

Famous composers like Johann Strauss I wrote great music for it. His son, Johann Strauss II, also wrote famous pieces. These songs helped the dance grow during the 19th century. Today, the dance is part of the International Standard division. There is even a group called the Waltz Series in New York. They work hard to keep the old traditions alive. It is a wonderful link to the past. People still love the joy of this spinning dance.
