Lustig used many different ways to trick people. One famous trick was called the "Rumanian Box." This was a large mahogany box that looked like a steamer trunk. He told people the box could make copies of any money. He would show them a real bill coming out of a slot. In truth, he had already hidden a real bill inside the box. He would then sell the fake machine for a huge amount of money. He once even sold one to a sheriff in Texas.

In 1925, Lustig went to Paris, France. He read a news article about the Eiffel Tower. The article said the tower was very expensive to fix. Lustig thought this was a great chance for a scam. He pretended to be a high-ranking government official. He told a group of men that the city wanted to sell the tower for scrap metal. He wanted to keep the sale a secret from the public. He used fake government papers to make his story look real.

Lustig found a man named André Poisson to trick. Poisson wanted to be a famous businessman in Paris. Lustig told him that the tower was being sold to scrap dealers. He also said that Poisson could pay a bribe to get the deal. Poisson paid Lustig about 70,000 francs for the tower. After getting the money, Lustig fled to Austria. He thought Poisson would be too embarrassed to tell the police. Lustig even tried to sell the tower a second time later that year.
