He was born on May 16, 1861, in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. Most people know him by his fake name, H. H. Holmes. He was a con artist who tricked people for money. He also committed many murders during his life. He was active as a criminal between 1891 and 1894. People even gave him scary nicknames like the Beast of Chicago.

Holmes was very good at learning and acting. He graduated from Gilmanton Academy when he was only 16 years old. Later, he went to the University of Michigan to study medicine. He graduated from medical school in June 1884. During his school years, he worked in an anatomy lab. He even admitted to using bodies to trick insurance companies. This habit of lying started very early in his life. He often used different names to hide who he really was.

In 1886, Holmes moved to the city of Chicago.

He bought a drugstore on West 63rd Street. He also built a large three-story building nearby. This building became very famous during the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. Many newspapers called it the "Murder Castle." They claimed it had trapdoors and secret rooms.

Most of these scary stories were actually exaggerations from the news. The building was mostly used for regular business.

Holmes's crimes were often linked to his many scams. He worked with an accomplice named Benjamin Pitezel.

This connection eventually led to Holmes being caught by the law. He was convicted and sentenced to death for killing Pitezel. During his trial, Holmes confessed to 27 different murders. He told many different stories that did not match the facts. For example, he claimed to kill a man in 1886. However, that man did not die until 1889 in Canada. His many lies make it hard for historians to know the truth.

Today, we study Holmes as a serial killer. A serial killer is someone who commits similar crimes over time. Some old news reports claimed he killed as many as 200 people. However, experts believe these numbers were too high and not true. The real crimes were often done to protect his dishonest lifestyle. He was finally executed by hanging on May 7, 1896.
