Vermiculite is a special kind of mineral.

It is a clay that can grow much larger. This happens when it gets very hot. The heat makes the mineral puff up. This step is called exfoliation.

Its name comes from a Latin word. That word means "to breed worms." This is because it looks like worms when it puffs up.

People use vermiculite in many ways. It helps plants grow in gardens. It can hold air, water, and food. It lets these things out when a plant needs them. It also helps seeds start to grow.

Vermiculite is great at stopping heat. This makes it useful for fireproofing. It can be used in walls and pipes. It is even used to make brake linings for cars. Some mines are in the United States and Brazil. In 2014, these places were top producers.
