Vermiculite is a very special kind of clay mineral.

It is known as a hydrous phyllosilicate. This means it is a mineral that contains water and has a layered structure. One of its most amazing traits is how it reacts to heat. When this mineral gets hot enough, it undergoes a process called exfoliation. This is when the mineral puffs up and expands significantly. The name comes from a Latin phrase meaning "to breed worms." This is because the mineral looks like tiny worms when it expands.

How does this expansion work? It all starts with the way the mineral is built. Vermiculite is a 2:1 clay. This means it has two tetrahedral sheets for every one octahedral sheet. In its natural state, it contains potassium ions between these molecular sheets. When the mineral is heated, these ions are replaced by magnesium and iron ions. This change helps create the weathered mica that becomes vermiculite. This process of weathering or hydrothermal alteration is how it forms in nature. It often appears where different types of rocks meet.

People have been studying this mineral for a long time. It was first described in 1824. This discovery happened in Millbury, Massachusetts. Since then, people have found many ways to use it. Some people even used it to help seeds start to grow. Scientists like Boodley and Sheldrake pioneered certain ways to use it in plant mixes. Today, many different industries rely on its unique properties. It is a very important part of modern science and building.

There are many important facts about where vermiculite comes from. Large commercial mines exist in many places around the world. These include the United States, Russia, South Africa, China, and Brazil. In 2014, South Africa, Brazil, the US, and China were the top producers.

These four places held about 90% of the world share. While production in South Africa is going down, production in Brazil is increasing. It is a mineral that the whole world uses in different ways.

You might see vermiculite in your own life without knowing it. It is often mixed with peat or bark to help garden plants grow.

This mix helps roots stay anchored and holds onto water and food. It is also used to make things that resist fire. For example, it can be used in fireproofing for steel pipes and walls. Some even use it in the brake linings of cars. It can even be used in swimming pools to make a smooth base. It is a tiny mineral that does many big jobs.
