Sillimanite is a special mineral. It is an aluminosilicate. This means it is made of certain parts like aluminum and silica.

This mineral is named after Benjamin Silliman. He was a chemist from America.

One type of sillimanite is called fibrolite. It looks like many tiny threads twisted together. You can see these threads with your eyes.

This mineral grows in rocks that have changed. These are called metamorphosed rocks. We find it in rocks like gneiss.

Sillimanite tells us about the past. It shows that the rock was very hot. It can also show if the pressure was high or low.

It is often found with other parts like quartz. It is also found in Delaware. In 1977, Delaware named it their state mineral.

People used sillimanite to make bricks. These are called alumina refractories. These bricks can stand very high heat.

Now, people mostly use other minerals for this job. They use andalusite or kyanite instead.
