People use it on floors and furniture. Some varnish is very shiny. Others can look flat.

Varnish is made of a few main parts. It often uses a resin. A resin is a sticky substance from plants or bugs.

It may also use a drying oil. These oils come from plants like walnuts or flax. A solvent helps thin the liquid so it can be brushed on.

Once applied, the varnish must harden. This is called curing. Some varnish hardens as the solvent evaporates. Other kinds harden through a chemical reaction with oxygen in the air. This reaction can give off heat. Because of this, oily rags can catch fire if not handled safely.

Some varnish comes from tiny insects. These bugs make a substance called shellac. People use shellac to polish fine furniture. Other varnishes use man-made parts. These can be even stronger for outdoor use.
