It is a type of porpoise. Its name means "little cow" in Spanish. It is the smallest cetacean in the world. This term describes animals like whales and dolphins.

Vaquitas have grey bodies. They have dark patches around their eyes and lips. They also have a tall fin on their backs.

These animals live in a small part of the Gulf of California in Mexico. They like to eat fish, squid, and shrimp.

Today, the vaquita is in great danger. They are called critically endangered. This means they are very close to disappearing forever. Most vaquitas die because of bycatch. Bycatch happens when animals are caught in fishing nets by mistake. People use these nets to catch other fish, like the totoaba.

There are very few vaquitas left. In 1997, there were about 567 of them. Now, there may be as few as 10 left in the wild.

Some people use concrete blocks with hooks to break illegal nets. This helps protect the area where vaquitas live.
