These whales are very big. An adult can weigh up to 100 tonnes. They also have a massive mouth. The mouth can be one-third of their body length.

Inside the mouth are long plates called baleen. These plates are made of keratin. This is the same stuff in your hair and nails. The whale is a filter feeder. It swims with its mouth open. Water flows through the baleen. The plates trap tiny food like krill. The whale then swallows the food.

Bowhead whales are very special. They may be the longest-living mammals. This means they live longer than any other mammal. Some can live for more than 200 years! They are also very loud. They use low sounds to talk to each other. They even sing long, complex songs during breeding season.
