The bowhead whale is a huge animal living in the cold Arctic and subarctic waters.

It is a baleen whale, which means it uses special plates to eat. This whale is very special because it is the only baleen whale that lives only in the Arctic. It gets its name from its large, triangular skull. This heavy head is a tool for survival. The whale uses it to break through thick Arctic ice.

This helps the whale move through its icy home.

Feeding is a very important thing that happens for a bowhead whale. It is a filter feeder, which means it strains food from the water. The whale swims forward with its mouth wide open. Water flows through hundreds of overlapping baleen plates. These plates are made of keratin, the same material in your hair. The plates act like a sieve to trap tiny animals called zooplankton. This food includes things like krill and small crustaceans.

Once the food is trapped, the whale swallows it near its long tongue.

Scientists have spent a long time studying how these whales are classified. Carl Linnaeus first named the species in 1758. For a long time, people thought bowheads were the same as right whales. They were all called "right whales" as one single group. In 1821, John Edward Gray suggested they were different. It took many years of debate to be sure. Studies in the 2000s finally proved they belong to two separate groups. Now we know the bowhead is in its own unique group called a monotypic genus.

Bowhead whales have many amazing physical facts. They have the largest mouth of any animal. This mouth can be almost one-third of their total body length. Their baleen plates are also the longest of any whale. Some plates can grow to be over 4 meters long. These whales are also very old. They may be the longest-living mammals on Earth. Some can live for more than 200 years!

This makes them very special to study.

Living as a bowhead whale is very different from how we live. While we use our voices to talk, these whales use low sounds to communicate. They sing long, complex songs during the breeding season.

These whales also have a clever way to stay cool. They have a special organ in their mouth to help regulate temperature. When they work hard, cold seawater flows over this organ. This cools their blood so their brain stays safe. They even use rocks to scrub dead skin off their bodies!
