Right whales are huge animals that live in our oceans.

There are three different species of right whales. These are the North Atlantic right whale, the North Pacific right whale, and the southern right whale. They are known for having very thick, round bodies. Their skin is usually dark gray or black. One very special feature is the callosities on their heads. These are rough patches of skin that look white because of tiny creatures called whale lice.

Every single whale has a unique pattern of these white patches. Scientists even use facial recognition software to tell them apart with 87% accuracy.

These whales have a very interesting way of eating. They are baleen whales, which means they have plates in their mouths instead of teeth.

They have between 200 and 270 of these plates on each side of their upper jaw. These plates are narrow and covered in very thin hairs. Right whales use them to catch tiny sea life like copepods and krill. They can find food at the surface or even on the ocean bottom. When they come up to breathe, they make a wide V-shaped spray.

This happens because their blowholes are spaced far apart on top of their heads.

Learning about these whales has taken a long time. A scientist named Carl Linnaeus first classified them in 1758. For a long time, experts argued about how many species actually existed. In 1864, John Edward Gray proposed the name Eubalaena for them. This name means "good or true whales." Later, scientists used DNA to find even more secrets. In 2000, studies showed the northern and southern whales are separate species. They found that the North Pacific species is actually more closely related to the southern whale than the North Atlantic one.

Right whales live in different parts of the world.

The North Atlantic whales live in the western Atlantic Ocean. The North Pacific whales live in a band from Japan to Alaska. The southern right whales live in the Southern Ocean. There are about 400 North Atlantic right whales left. There are about 15,000 southern right whales. The North Pacific species is the largest of the three. These whales like to stay near coasts, bays, and continental shelves. This helps them find shelter and plenty of food.

Right whales are very important to study because they face many hard jobs. In the past, they were hunted by whalers. They were easy targets because they are docile and float when they die. This happened because 40% of their body weight is blubber. Today, humans are still a major threat to them. The two biggest causes of death are being struck by ships or getting stuck in fishing gear.

Because of this, the North Atlantic and North Pacific right whales are among the most endangered whales in the world.
