Whaling is the practice of hunting whales for their many products. People use whale meat for food and blubber for oil. This oil was very important during the Industrial Revolution.

Some people also use whale parts to make carvings. They might use tusks, teeth, or vertebrae for art. Today, whales are also studied to understand the ocean's carbon cycle. Scientists found that whales help store carbon in the sea.

In the past, the way people hunted whales changed over time. Early hunting was done by small groups in coastal areas. Later, organized fleets of ships began to travel the oceans. In the 1900s, new tools made hunting much faster. These included factory ships and explosive harpoons.

By the late 1930s, over 50,000 whales were killed every year. This caused many whale species to become very rare.

Humans have been whaling for a very long time. Some evidence shows whaling in Korea as far back as 6000 BC.

As early as 875 AD, whaling was already an organized industry. By the 1500s, the Basque people led the trade in Spain and France.

They were very successful and dominated the trade for 500 years. Eventually, whaling spread to almost every corner of the world.

To protect whales, many countries joined together to make rules. They formed the International Whaling Commission, or the IWC, in 1946.

In 1982, the IWC decided to stop commercial whaling. This pause began for all whale species in 1986. This rule helped many whale populations grow again. However, some countries like Japan, Norway, and Iceland still hunt whales. They mostly hunt for food rather than for oil.

Today, there is a big debate about how we treat whales. Some people want to stop all commercial hunting completely. Others believe that certain countries should still be allowed to hunt.

Many people now prefer whale watching instead of hunting. This is a way to see whales living in the wild. In some places, watching whales has become a huge business. It is a much different way to connect with these animals.
