A convoy is a group of vehicles traveling together for support. These groups can be made of motor vehicles or ships. Traveling in a group helps provide mutual protection for everyone involved. It also helps a unit stay together as they move. Some convoys are organized with armed ships for defense. Other convoys are used for non-military tasks like driving through remote areas.

Convoys work by grouping many ships into one large target. This makes them harder to find than a single ship. If a pirate finds a group, they may only catch a few ships. The rest of the group can then escape away. Small groups of warships can also act as escorts to stop attacks. This system was very effective for many years.

Naval convoys have been used for many centuries. Merchant ships used naval protection as far back as the 12th century. The Spanish treasure fleets were a very famous convoy system. They sailed from the 1520s until 1790. During the late 18th century, people developed better tactics to stop pirates. Many big naval battles happened around these groups. These included the Battle of Portland in 1653 and the Battle of Ushant in 1781.

In World War I, the threat changed with submarines. The British Admiralty did not use convoys at first. They thought convoys would be too slow for merchant ships. They also worried that large groups would overload ports. However, they officially started using convoys in the Atlantic in September 1917. During World War II, the system became even more important. In the Atlantic, convoys had between 30 and 70 merchant ships.

Different parts of the world used different tactics. In the Atlantic, the Allies used planes and special ships. They used tools like sonar to track submarines. In the Pacific, Japanese merchant ships rarely traveled in convoys. This made them easier for American submarines to find. The U.S. Navy also used escort carriers to protect troop groups. One famous fight was the Battle at Samar. There, U.S. escorts defended a troop convoy against a much larger fleet.
