Humpback whales are large animals found in oceans worldwide.

They have a very unique body shape. They have long pectoral fins, which are flippers on their sides. These fins help them turn fast. They also have bumps on their heads called tubercles. These bumps may help them feel things in the water.

Humpbacks are famous for breaching. This is when they jump out of the water. They also slap the surface with their tails.

These whales eat small fish and tiny shrimp called krill. They use a clever way to hunt called bubble-net feeding. A group of whales swims in a circle. They blow bubbles to make a net. This net traps the food in a cylinder.

Then, the whales swim into the bubbles to eat. Male humpbacks also sing long songs underwater. These songs can last up to 33 minutes. Some whales even have barnacles living on their skin.

In the past, people hunted these whales. Their numbers fell to about 5,000 by the 1960s. Now, there are about 135,000 whales in the world.
