The island was made by volcanoes long ago.

The land is mostly dry and warm. There is very little water on the surface. In the north, some trees grow in the hills. These trees use fog to get moisture.

Long ago, many wild goats lived on the island. The goats ate almost all the plants. This made the island very bare. To help, people worked to remove the goats. Now, new plants can grow again.

Today, the island is a biosphere reserve. This means it is a protected place for nature. Scientists and fishermen live there. They help look after the birds and sea life. The island is also famous for great white sharks.
