Guadalupe Island is a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean.

It sits off the western coast of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. The island is located southwest of the city of Ensenada. It is the westernmost region of Mexico. The island is made of two large shield volcanoes. These volcanoes are now either extinct or dormant.

The landscape is very rugged and has high mountain ridges. Mount Augusta is the tallest peak at the northern end. El Picacho is a high point at the southern end.

The island has two different climate zones. The lower areas are very dry and warm. The higher areas are more temperate and cool. Most of the rain falls during the winter months.

In the north, trees like the Monterey pine grow in the hills. These trees can survive because of fog drip. This happens when fog turns into moisture for the plants. The southern part of the island is mostly bare land. The coast has many rocky cliffs and steep walls. Some small islets sit near the shore, like Roca Elefante.

History shows that many people visited the island long ago. A Spanish expedition led by Sebastián Vizcaíno first saw it in 1602. In the 18th and 19th centuries, hunters came to the island. They hunted fur seals and elephant seals for their skins and oil.

During this time, hunters likely brought goats to the island. These goats grew in number very quickly. They ate almost all the native plants and trees. This made it very hard for new plants to grow. By 1901, a naturalist noted that many plants were disappearing.

Today, the island is a protected biosphere reserve.

This means the Mexican government helps protect the plants and animals. In 2005, a big plan was finished to remove the goats. Workers removed about 10,000 goats to help the island recover. Now, new seedlings are finally growing again. Only a few people live on the island permanently. These include scientists, military staff, and some fishermen.

A small community of fishermen lives at Campo Oeste.

Guadalupe Island is also a famous place for sea life. It was a popular spot for cage diving with great white sharks.

However, a ban on this tourism was put in place in 2022. The island is very important for many marine mammals and birds. It shares many living things with the Channel Islands in the United States. The island helps keep species safe in the Pacific Ocean.

Protecting this place helps the whole ocean stay healthy.
