Vanessa Nakate is a prominent climate justice activist from Uganda. Climate justice is the idea that climate change affects people differently. She advocates for fairness and renewable energy solutions. Her work aims to ensure that vulnerable people are not left behind.

Nakate uses several different methods to drive environmental change. She founded the Rise Up Movement to organize activists. She also created Youth for Future Africa to empower young people. One major part of her work is the Green Schools Project. This initiative focuses on transitioning Ugandan schools to solar energy. The project also installs eco-friendly stoves in these buildings. To date, the project has completed installations in thirty different schools.

Her activism follows a clear path from local to global stages. It began with a solitary strike in January 2019. For several months, she stood alone outside the Parliament of Uganda. She was inspired by the actions of Greta Thunberg. Eventually, social media allowed other youth to join her cause. They worked together to draw attention to the Congolian rainforests. This local protest grew into a large international presence.

Nakate's journey involves many significant international forums. In December 2019, she spoke at the COP25 conference in Spain. In early 2020, she joined twenty activists to write a letter regarding the World Economic Forum in Davos. This letter asked governments and banks to stop subsidizing fossil fuels. She was one of five international delegates invited by Arctic Basecamp to camp in Davos. She also participated in a climate march during the Forum. These events helped bring African perspectives to global discussions.

Her work carries immense social and economic significance. Nakate explains that Uganda depends heavily on agriculture for survival. Climate change causes extreme weather like floods and droughts. These events can destroy farms and lower crop production. When crops fail, the price of food increases significantly. This leads to starvation and death for the less privileged. Nakate argues that the most privileged can survive these food crises. However, rural communities often face the most direct danger.

Nakate has received many honors for her leadership and courage. In 2020, the United Nations named her an SDG 13 young leader. She was featured on the cover of TIME magazine in November 2021. She was also included in the BBC's 100 Women list in 2020. Other awards include the Haub Law Environmental Award from 2021. In 2022, she won the Goalkeepers Campaign Award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She also received the Helmut Schmidt Future Prize in 2022.

Her activism also connects to broader issues of human rights and media. In January 2020, the Associated Press cropped her out of a photo. This photo included Greta Thunberg and other activists at the World Economic Forum. Nakate accused the agency of a racist attitude. The AP later changed the photo and issued an apology. Nakate noted that this incident brought more attention to African activists. She hopes the media will now pay more attention to them.

Finally, Nakate connects climate action to many other global systems. She serves on the Malala Fund Board to support girls' education. She believes climate challenges can make education more difficult to achieve. As a Christian, she views environmental care as a responsibility to the planet. She also sits on the council of the Progressive International. This organization promotes progressive, left-wing politics. She views the protection of the Earth as a service to all people.
