This mountain sits on the border between two countries. These countries are Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a very important landmark for both nations. Mount Stanley is the highest mountain in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is also the highest mountain in Uganda. Across the entire continent of Africa, it ranks as the fourth-highest mountain.

The mountain is part of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. This park is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This status means the area is considered important to the world. The mountain is also located within the Great Rift Valley. This is a massive geological feature of the Earth. Because of its extreme height, the environment changes at the top. The peak and several nearby peaks are high enough to support glaciers. Glaciers are large masses of ice that remain on the ground.

Mount Stanley is not just one single point. The mountain consists of two twin summits at its highest part. It also includes several other lower peaks that make up its structure. The highest point is known as Margherita Peak. This summit reaches an elevation of 5,109 meters (16,763 feet). Margherita Peak is named in honor of Queen Margherita of Italy. The mountain's name comes from a colonist named Sir Henry Morton Stanley.

There are many other distinct peaks surrounding the main summits. Alexandra is a major peak with an elevation of 5,091 meters (16,703 feet). Albert is another very high peak at 5,087 meters (16,690 feet). Other notable peaks include Savoia, which reaches 4,977 meters (16,330 feet). Ellena is also nearby at 4,968 meters (16,300 feet). The mountain features many more named high points. These include Elizabeth at 4,929 meters (16,170 feet) and Phillip at 4,920 meters (16,140 feet).

As you look at the different parts of the mountain, you see many names. Moebius is a peak at 4,916 meters (4,913 feet). Cheptegei is another high point at 4,907 meters (16,099 feet). Even the lower parts of the mountain are quite massive. The Great Tooth is a peak that reaches 4,603 meters (15,100 feet). Each of these peaks contributes to the complex shape of the Rwenzori range.

History tells us when people first reached these heights. The first recorded ascent of Mount Stanley happened in 1906. A group of four men completed this difficult journey. Their names were Luigi Amedeo, J. Petigax, C. Ollier, and J. Brocherel. This event marked a major moment in the exploration of the Rwenzori range. Before this, the high summits were not officially climbed by a recorded group.

Mount Stanley serves as a vital part of the African landscape. It connects the geography of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its height makes it a key feature of the Great Rift Valley system. The presence of glaciers on its peaks shows how high the mountain reaches into the atmosphere. This mountain is a significant part of the natural world in Africa. It remains one of the most prominent landmarks in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
