She is known for pressuring global leaders to address environmental crises and human rights. Her work has inspired a global movement of young people. This influence is often called the "Greta effect." It refers to her ability to increase environmental awareness and youth engagement worldwide.

Thunberg's activism began with a solo school strike in August 2018. At age 15, she sat outside the Swedish parliament, known as the Riksdag. She protested during school hours to demand climate action. Her goal was for the Swedish government to reduce carbon emissions. She wanted leaders to follow the Paris Agreement, which is an international climate treaty.

This protest happened after Sweden experienced its hottest summer in 262 years. Her strike was inspired by youth activists in the United States who protested school shootings.

Social media played a massive role in spreading her message. After she posted photos of her strike on Instagram and Twitter, her cause went viral.

High-profile activists helped amplify her posts. By December 2018, more than 20,000 students were striking in at least 270 cities. This grew into the Fridays for Future movement. This movement allowed students to strike every Friday to demand change.

Greta was born on January 3, 2003, in Stockholm, Sweden. Her parents are Malena Ernman, an opera singer, and Svante Thunberg, an actor.

As a child, she felt deep sadness about climate change. This led to struggles with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and selective mutism. Selective mutism is a condition where a person only speaks when necessary. She was also diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Thunberg views this diagnosis as a "superpower" that helps her focus on the truth. She has also become a well-known activist for autism rights.

Thunberg has delivered powerful speeches at major global events. In 2018, she spoke at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24). In 2019, she addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos.

During that forum, she famously declared, "Our house is on fire." She has also addressed parliaments in the United Kingdom, France, and Europe. Even Pope Francis expressed his support for her work. Her speeches often use scientific data and published climate research to make her points.

Her activism has expanded beyond the environment to include global justice. She has voiced support for various regions, including Ukraine, Palestine, Armenia, and Cuba. In 2025, she joined a humanitarian flotilla heading toward the Gaza Strip.

She also spoke out about the impact of floods in India and supported the Indian farmers' protests. This wider focus shows how she connects environmental issues to human rights and political stability.

Thunberg's work has received both high honors and significant criticism. In 2019, Time magazine named her Person of the Year. She was also included in their list of the 100 Most Influential People.

However, some critics have questioned her methods and her role in political debates. Despite this, she remains a central figure in discussions about the future of the planet and the role of youth in politics.
