Vanessa Nakate is a brave leader from Uganda. She works hard to protect our planet from climate change. This means she fights to stop the earth from getting too hot. She wants to make sure everyone is treated fairly. This is called climate justice. She speaks up for people in Africa who face hard times. Many of these people live in villages or rural areas. They rely on farming to grow food for their families.

Vanessa uses many ways to help the world. She started a group called the Rise Up Movement. She also founded Youth for Future Africa. One of her most important jobs is the Green Schools Project. This project brings clean energy to schools in Uganda. It uses solar power from the sun. It also uses special eco-friendly stoves. So far, this project has helped thirty different schools.

Her journey began a few years ago. Vanessa grew up in Kampala, which is the capital of Uganda. In December 2018, she spoke about the very high heat in her country. In January 2019, she started a solo strike. She stood alone outside the Parliament of Uganda for many months. She was inspired by another activist named Greta Thunberg. Soon, other young people joined her through social media. They wanted to protect the Congolian rainforests.

Vanessa has traveled to many important places. She spoke at the COP25 meeting in Spain in December 2019. She also went to Davos to talk at the World Economic Forum. In 2020, she was named a young leader by the United Nations. She has even appeared on the cover of TIME magazine. She received the Haub Law Environmental Award in 2021. She also won the Goalkeepers Campaign Award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2022.

Vanessa believes that climate change affects everything. It can cause hunger, poverty, and disease. She says that when floods or droughts destroy farms, food prices go up. This makes it very hard for poor people to eat. She wants world leaders to leave their comfort zones. She wants them to see the danger we are in. Vanessa also works with the Malala Fund to help girls go to school. She looks up to Wangari Maathai, a famous leader from Kenya.
