The Vanderbilt family was once the wealthiest family in the United States. Their story began long ago with a man named Jan Aertszoon. He was a Dutch farmer from the village of De Bilt. In 1650, he moved to a colony called New Netherland. His descendants eventually became the famous Vanderbilt family. This family helped shape the American Gilded Age.

Cornelius Vanderbilt was the person who started the family dynasty. He was born into a family with modest means on Staten Island. He left school when he was only 11 years old. He started with just one small boat for traveling. He grew this into a huge shipping and railroad empire. People gave him the nickname "Commodore" because of his success. He was the richest American until he died in 1877.

After Cornelius died, his son William Henry Vanderbilt took over. William Henry was the only heir to make the fortune even larger. He grew the New York Central Railroad to reach more places. He also built the first grand mansion on Fifth Avenue. His son, Cornelius Vanderbilt II, became the next head of the house. He built a massive home with about 154 rooms. He also built a famous house called The Breakers.

Many family members built huge and beautiful homes across the country. Some lived in luxury in Newport, Rhode Island. Others built Berkshire cottages in western Massachusetts. George Washington Vanderbilt II built the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. This house has 250 rooms and is the largest in the United States.

Many of these grand houses were eventually sold or turned into museums. This period of change is sometimes called the "Fall of the House of Vanderbilt."

The Vanderbilt name is still well known today through many descendants. Some family members became famous in art, news, and sports. For example, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the Whitney Museum of American Art. Journalist Anderson Cooper is also a descendant of the family. Other members have been actors, musicians, and even dukes. The family's history shows how one person's hard work can change many lives.
