The family's roots go back to a man named Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours. He was a minor aristocrat from France. In the year 1800, he and his sons moved to America. They brought their skills and their history with them to a new land. This move helped start a long history of business and leadership in the U.S.

One son, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont, started a very important business. In 1802, he built a gunpowder mill near the Brandywine River in Delaware.

He chose a perfect spot for this hard job. The river provided water to power the mill. Nearby willow trees provided wood for charcoal. He could also ship supplies like sulfur and saltpeter by the Delaware River. This mill eventually grew into the largest black powder company in the world. The family stayed in control of the company until the 1960s.

As time went on, the family grew their wealth in new ways. They moved into the chemical industry and the automotive industry. They had big interests in companies like General Motors and the DuPont company.

At its peak, the family businesses employed about 10 percent of the people in Delaware. The family also played a big role in the government. Some members served as U.S. senators, and one served as the Governor of Delaware. They even helped with important deals like the Louisiana Purchase.

Beyond business, the du Ponts have a deep love for nature and gardens. Many family members were avid gardeners who brought plant interests from France.

They built many beautiful estates that are now famous places to visit. You can explore Longwood Gardens or visit the Hagley Museum and Library. Other places include Winterthur and the Mt. Cuba Center. Some family members even worked to breed and race thoroughbred horses. They helped create places like Delaware Park for these animals.

Today, the family's legacy lives on through many different groups. They helped start the National Trust for Historic Preservation to save old buildings.
