Vaalbara

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, Earth had giant lands called supercontinents. One possible early supercontinent was named Vaalbara.

This name comes from two large pieces of land. These pieces are called cratons. One is the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa. The other is the Pilbara craton in Australia.

Scientists use clues to study if they were once joined. They found similar rock layers in both places. They also found tiny glass beads in both lands. These beads were made by large meteorites hitting the Earth.

These hits happened about 3.5 billion years ago. Finding the same beads helps show the lands were together.

Some scientists still debate this idea. They think the similarities might happen for other reasons. They also found that the two lands split apart long ago. Evidence shows they were no longer joined by 2.8 billion years ago. Even so, Vaalbara could have been a very stable land. It may have lasted for a long time.
