Mesoarchean

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Mesoarchean was a long time ago. It was a part of the Archean Eon.

During this time, the Earth changed in big ways. Large pieces of land began to move. This is called plate subduction. This is when one piece of land slides under another. Scientists found clues for this in western Australia. They studied a place called the Pilbara Craton.

The world was very warm then. The air had much methane and carbon dioxide. These gases helped keep the heat in. Some studies say the ocean was 55 to 85 degrees Celsius. Other studies say it was below 50 degrees Celsius.

Tiny life began to grow and spread. These were microbes. Some microbes were cyanobacteria. They made oxygen gas. Most oxygen stayed in the water near the shore.

There was also a time of ice. This is called the Pongola glaciation. It happened around 2.9 billion years ago. Ice reached a latitude of 48 degrees. This was a very busy time for our planet.
