Mesoproterozoic

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Mesoproterozoic was a long era of Earth's history. We have a good record of this time. Large pieces of land moved on our planet. These pieces are called continental plates.

A huge land mass called Columbia broke apart. This happened between 1500 and 1350 million years ago. Later, land pieces joined to make Rodinia. This new supercontinent formed around 1100 to 900 million years ago.

Moving lands made many mountains. These mountain-building events are called orogenies. Many orogenies happened in Africa and Antarctica. They also happened in Europe and North America.

Life was changing in big ways too. Living things began sexual reproduction. This is a way to make new life. It helped life become more complex. Some life forms were made of many cells. These are called multicellular organisms.

Stromatolites were also very common then. These are groups of tiny living things. This era is split into three parts. They are the Calymmian, the Ectasian, and the Stenian. These names help us study the time.
