A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an infection in the body's plumbing. This system includes the kidneys, the bladder, and the urethra.

There are two main types of these infections. A lower UTI affects the bladder or the urethra. This is often called cystitis. An upper UTI affects the kidneys. Doctors call this pyelonephritis. These infections are very common around the world. About 400 million cases occur every single year.

Most infections happen when tiny germs enter the urinary tract. The most common germ is called E. coli. It usually travels from the bowel to the urethra.

Once the E. coli reaches the bladder, it sticks to the walls. It can even build a biofilm. A biofilm is a sticky layer that helps germs stay put. This layer helps them resist the body's natural defenses. Sometimes, germs can also enter the tract through the blood.

People have known about these infections for a very long time. The first written description is found in the Ebers Papyrus. This ancient document dates back to about 1550 BC.

Even in ancient times, people noticed these health issues. Today, we use much better tools to study them. We can look at urine under a microscope to find bacteria. This helps doctors see if there are white blood cells present. It also helps them see if there is blood in the urine.

Symptoms can change depending on who is sick. In healthy women, a UTI might cause burning or pain during urination. It can also cause a strong urge to pee.

In young children, a fever might be the only sign. Very old people might just feel tired or confused. For some, the urine might even look bloody or contain pus. About 10% of women will have an infection in a single year. They are most likely to get them between ages 16 and 35.

Doctors usually treat simple cases with antibiotics. These are medicines that fight the germs. Some people might need a longer course of medicine. Others may need medicine given through a tube in their vein. For people who get infections many times, doctors have other options. They might use a medicine called methenamine. Some women may also use estrogen to help protect them. It is important to follow a doctor's plan to get better.
