An abscess is a collection of pus that builds up inside the body's tissue.

This usually happens because of a bacterial infection. Most skin abscesses come from a germ called Staphylococcus aureus. This germ is very common in many parts of the world. Sometimes, a more difficult germ called MRSA is involved. An abscess can form on the skin or deep inside organs. It can even happen in the lungs, brain, or kidneys. While skin abscesses are very common, internal ones are harder to find. They can be quite serious depending on where they are located.

When germs enter the body, they can destroy local cells. This damage causes the body to start an inflammatory response. This response draws many white blood cells to the area. The body also increases blood flow to the spot. To protect itself, the body builds a wall called a capsule. This capsule is made of healthy cells. It tries to keep the pus from spreading to other parts. However, this wall can also make it hard for immune cells to reach the bacteria.

Doctors look for specific signs to find an abscess. A skin abscess often looks red, warm, and swollen. It can feel painful or even have a wave-like motion when pressed. This motion happens because the pus moves inside. Some people might also feel chills or have a fever.

To be sure, a doctor might use an ultrasound. This uses sound to see inside the body. For deeper infections, a doctor might use a CT scan. If the diagnosis is still not clear, they may use a needle to take a sample. This helps them see exactly what is happening.

There are many ways doctors treat these collections of pus. For most skin abscesses, the standard way is incision and drainage.

This means a doctor makes a small cut to let the pus out. Sometimes they use medicine called lidocaine to help with the pain. Doctors may also use antibiotics to help fight the infection. In some cases, they might even use a special loop for drainage. Some doctors used to pack the area with gauze, but newer studies show this may not be necessary. Closing the area quickly can sometimes help it heal faster.

Abscesses are a common part of human health history. In 2005, 3.2 million people visited emergency departments in America for them. In 2008, about 13,000 people in Australia were hospitalized for abscesses. They can happen to anyone, but certain things can increase the risk. For example, people who use needles to take medicine are at higher risk.

An abscess is different from a cyst, which has a clear wall and different material. It is also different from cellulitis, which is redness without pus. Understanding how these work helps us take better care of our bodies.
