A stab wound is a type of injury where a sharp object pierces the skin.

These wounds usually happen with knives. They can also come from broken bottles or ice picks. Most stabbings happen because of intentional violence. Some can happen by accident or by choice. While they are common, they cause less than 10% of all penetrating trauma deaths. This is because the damage is often more focused than other injuries.

How these wounds work is different from a gunshot. A knife is a low-velocity weapon. This means the damage stays mostly in the path of the object. It does not spread to the surrounding tissue as much as a bullet does. The abdomen is the most common area for these injuries. Doctors must check the size and length of the blade. They also look at the trajectory, or the path the object took. This helps them predict which internal parts might be hurt.

Medical care has changed a lot over time. Long ago, Hippocrates said to keep wounds dry. Later, Guy de Chauliac suggested fixing severed tissues and removing foreign objects. In 1896, Ludwig Rehn performed the first successful heart surgery on a person who was stabbed. In the late 1800s, it was hard to help victims. They could not get to hospitals quickly enough. Doctors also struggled to repair organs effectively back then.

Today, doctors use many tools to help. They may use sonography, which uses sound to find bleeding. They might also use a CT scan to see the injury clearly. If a person is stable, doctors might use observation. This means watching the person instead of doing surgery right away. This can prevent an unnecessary operation. If surgery is needed, a surgeon tracks the path of the weapon. They repair the specific organs that were damaged.

We can see how medical science helps in many places. In Canada, stabbings and gunshots happen at similar rates. Between 2005 and 2009, there were 1,008 stabbings and 980 gunshots. In the United Kingdom, stab wounds happen four times more than gunshots. However, most of these injuries only affect the subcutaneous tissue, which is the layer just under the skin. This is why many people recover well with the right care.
