Most of these wounds come from knives. They can also come from broken bottles or ice picks. Most happen because of violence. Some happen by accident or by choice.

These wounds are different from gunshot wounds. A knife moves at a low speed. This means the damage stays in a narrow path. The belly is the most common place for these injuries.

Doctors must act fast to help. They try to stop bleeding and keep the body warm. They may use a scan to look inside the body. A scan is a way to see inside without cutting. They might also use a tool called sonography. This uses sound to find internal bleeding.

Sometimes, a person needs surgery. A surgeon may follow the path of the object. They fix any parts that were hurt. If the injury is not deep, doctors may just watch the person. This is called observation. It can save a person from an extra surgery. In the past, doctors used surgery for almost every deep wound. Now, they only use it when it is truly needed.
