An abscess is a collection of pus inside the body.

This often happens because of a bacterial infection. Bacteria are tiny germs that can cause harm. Most skin abscesses come from a germ called Staphylococcus aureus.

When germs enter the body, they can damage cells. This damage makes the body start an inflammatory response. This is a way the body tries to fight the germs. It sends white blood cells to the area. The body also builds a wall around the pus. This wall is called a capsule. The capsule tries to keep the infection from spreading.

An abscess can look red, warm, and swollen.

It can also feel painful or soft. Some people may also get a fever or chills. Abscesses can form on the skin. They can also form on organs like the lungs or brain.

Doctors use tools to find an abscess. They might use an ultrasound.

This is a way to see inside the body using sound. To treat a skin abscess, a doctor may cut it open. This lets the pus drain out. This is called incision and drainage.
