Staphylococcus aureus is a tiny, round bacterium that lives all around us.

Scientists often call it "golden staph." This name comes from the golden-yellow color it makes when it grows in groups.

Most of the time, these bacteria live peacefully on our skin or in our noses. They are part of our normal microbiota, which is the collection of tiny living things that live on our bodies. For many people, they do not cause any trouble at all. However, they can sometimes become an opportunistic pathogen. This means they can cause sickness if they get into the wrong part of the body.

These bacteria have a very specific way of working and growing. They reproduce through a process called binary fission. This is when one cell splits into two new daughter cells.

Sometimes, the cells do not separate completely. This causes them to stay attached in grape-like clusters. The bacteria can also live with or without oxygen. This ability is called being a facultative anaerobe. Some strains are very strong because they produce virulence factors. These are special tools, like protein toxins, that help the bacteria cause an infection. They can even use a protein to stop our body's antibodies from working.

People have been studying these bacteria for a long time. In 1880, a Scottish surgeon named Alexander Ogston discovered them. He was looking at pus from a surgical abscess. He noticed the bacteria looked like small clusters under his microscope. He chose the name Staphylococcus because of this clustered shape. Later, in 1884, a German scientist named Friedrich Julius Rosenbach identified the specific type called Staphylococcus aureus. He was able to tell it apart from a related bacterium called Staphylococcus albus. In the early 1930s, doctors started using a test called coagulase testing. This test looks for a special enzyme that the bacteria produce.

There are many important facts to know about how these bacteria affect health. In the United States, about 500,000 hospital patients get a staphylococcal infection every year. Sadly, up to 50,000 deaths in the U.S. are linked to these infections each year. Some strains have become very hard to treat. These are called antibiotic-resistant strains, such as MRSA.

These germs can fight off the medicines doctors use to kill them. While penicillin could cure infections before the 1940s, resistance became common by the end of that decade. Today, MRSA infections alone cost the U.S. healthcare system over $3.2 billion every year.

Understanding these bacteria helps us see how they connect to our daily lives. You might have seen a small pimple or a boil on your skin. These can sometimes be caused by S. aureus.

It can also cause food poisoning if it gets into what we eat. The bacteria can spread through skin-to-skin contact or by touching objects like towels or athletic equipment. Even though they can cause serious problems like pneumonia or bone infections, many people carry them without ever knowing. About 21% to 30% of people are long-term carriers. This shows how these tiny living things are a constant part of our world.
