Staphylococcus is a large group of tiny living things called bacteria.

Their name comes from ancient Greek words. These words mean "bunch of grapes" and "kernel." This name describes how they look under a microscope. They are shaped like little round balls called cocci. These balls grow together in tight clusters. These clusters look just like a bunch of grapes on a vine.

These bacteria have many ways to live and grow. They are facultative anaerobes, which means they can grow with or without oxygen. This helps them live in many different places. Some species live in the soil or in sweet flower nectar. Many species live on the skin and mucous membranes of humans and animals. They can even live in marine sponges. Some species are very good at living in salty water. Most of these bacteria do not cause any disease at all.

A scientist named Alexander Ogston gave them their name in 1880. He was a surgeon and a bacteriologist from Scotland. He chose the name to follow a pattern used for other bacteria. There are at least 44 different species in this group. Some species have many subspecies, which are smaller groups within a species. Scientists use 16s rRNA sequences to study how they are related. This helps them sort the bacteria into different clusters or groups.

There are many important facts about these different species. One famous type is Staphylococcus aureus. It can cause serious infections in hospitals. Some strains of this bacteria have become antibiotic resistant. This means the medicines used to kill them do not work as well. Another type is Staphylococcus epidermidis, which lives on human skin. It can cause infections in people who are very sick. There is even a species called Staphylococcus edaphicus found in Antarctica.

Learning about these bacteria is a lot like being a detective. Scientists look for clues to see which species is which. They check if the bacteria can make an enzyme called coagulase. This enzyme can cause blood to form a clot. They also use tests to see how the bacteria react to different things. For example, they check if the bacteria can grow in salt. This helps doctors understand how to keep people safe from germs.
